Brunei Clock Tower

This black and white photo is currently being sold for about US$775 together with two other photographs and two other postcards on ebay. I am not sure whether this is worth that amount of money but you are most welcome to bid on them.

This photograph shows the clock tower and I would presume the photo was taken in the early 1960s. You can still see the old police station and the old police officers barrack in the background. By 1980, the old police station had been demolished, the barracks were demolised earlier.

There was no traffic light yet but there is a light on top of the junction. This served to remind road users that there is a junction.

The clock tower was removed from the junction for a time in the 1990's. The rumour was, it resembeled a christian cross.

Urban myth? Or part of the story behind the clock?

The clock tower was built to commemorate the state visit by the first Malayan King (Yang di-Pertuan Agong), Al-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Muhammad to Brunei in 1961.

I think it was removed temporarily in 1995 because a newer clock (to celebrate the silver jubilee of the changing of the name Bandar Brunei to Bandar Seri Begawan)was to replace it. DYTM the Paduka Seri Duli Pengiran Perdana Wazir Sahibol Himmah Wal Waqar finally decided the original clock tower should be preserved, and it remains to this day a part of Brunei's proud heritage.
