Vintage Brunei Measuring Devices


Many young people do not know what these are. These were used by the Brunei Business Establishments, at the markets, at the provision shops. The Dacing or weighing scale was used to measure weights of goods being sold. These were used until about 1973 or thereabouts as Brunei changed to the metric system. The Dacing measures weights using 'katis' which is the local weighing term. During the conversion I remember the PR which keeps saying that one kati is equal to 600 grams.

The Gantang together with its accessories, the Cupak, the Cupak 4 and Cupak 8 are used to measure volumes of goods to be sold off. One gangtang is equal to 4 cupak. These were used probably much earlier.
