Brunei Hosting Asia-Pacific Chiefs of Defence Conference

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Monday, November 3, 2014 - THE Asia-Pacific Chiefs of Defence Conference (CHOD) is taking place in Brunei for the first time this week, bringing together top military officials from 26 countries.

Co-hosted by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) and the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM), dialogue at the conference will focus on the theme of “Multilateralism: Practical Cooperation towards Shared Responsibilities”.

The delegates, comprising commanders and chiefs of staffs from the Asia-Pacific region, will also discuss mutual security challenges, ways to improve relations and foster security cooperation.

China will make its debut participation in the conference, joining Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, France, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand and Pakistan.

Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, United Kingdom and Tonga will also take part in the five-day conference to be held at The Empire Hotel & Country Club.

RBAF Commander Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih Abdullah is expected to host a welcoming reception this evening, while the Deputy Defence Minister Dato Paduka Hj Mustappa Hj Sirat is scheduled to launch the conference tomorrow.

Among the talks lined include Professor Yoshihide Soeya’s presentation on “Overcoming the Limitations of Multilateralism”.

This year’s conference will also see presentations from Professor Jia Qingguo on “Effective Global Governance as a Guiding Concept of Asia-Pacific Strategy” and Dr Edward N Luttwak on “Roles of the Armed Forces in Response to New and Emerging Security Challenges”. Professor Andrew O’Neil will also deliver a presentation on “Military Operations Other than War (MOOTW) as a means of Cooperation”.
