THE Internal Security Department (ISD) has imposed a restriction order on a 34-year-old local woman linked with a foreigner who had planned to join a terrorist organisation.

In a statement issued by the department yesterday, the woman was detained after investigations found that she had been in contact with the foreign national since August 2014 through a social network.

It added that the woman continued to get in touch with the foreign national despite knowing his intention to join a terrorist organisation.

"She also facilitated his entry into Brunei Darussalam, sought employment for him and planned to get married in this country.

"This plan will enable him to prolong his stay in this country before continuing with his plan to join the terror group," the statement read.

Due to her link and involvement, the department said it has imposed the restriction order under Section 3(1)(b) of the Internal Security Act (Chapter 133) on the local woman effective February 4, 2015.

The statement further said the government has been closely monitoring reports on individuals from countries within this region who have travelled and joined terrorist organisation of IS (Islamic State) in Syria and Iraq.

The latest trend used by those individuals involved using a third country as a transit point in order to avoid detection by the authorities.

Brunei Darussalam has also been deemed as one of the alternative route.

"The Government of His Majesty does not tolerate terrorism in any form or under any guise and will take preventive measures in order to pre-empt and neutralise any terrorist threats to safeguard the peace and security of this country," the statement said.

These measures are also taken to demonstrate Brunei’s strong commitment and close cooperation with internal and external intelligence and enforcement agencies in combating any activities that could jeopardise public order and security, the department said.

In relation to these developments, ISD urged the public to be vigilant of suspicious individuals or foreign nationals especially those who use religion as a pretext to influence or recruit, lure locals into marriage based on the doctrine of jihad which goes against the true ‘Syariat’ of Islam or simply plan to use Brunei as a transit point or as alternative route to a known conflict area.

The department also called on the public to always be on alert and prepared to assist the government by providing any information that is deemed as potentially harmful to the security and harmony of the nation specifically on any individual or group that may be involved with militant and terrorist activities to ISD hotline at 133 or by contacting the nearest ISD branches in the country.
